Yesterday, I shared that I had the chance to hear last week from the amazing Dr. Bessel van der Kolk about the conditions related to the Coronavirus pandemic that might set us up for trauma. . The first of these is lack of predictability. . During this time of uncertainty and unpredictability, our lives need to be as predictable as we can make them. . That means we make schedules for ourselves. Literally write things in the calendar where you can see them and know what’s coming up, at least in our own lives. . My kids and I started isolating during what was their spring break from school, so it was easy for it to feel like one long vacation...at first. But the lack of knowns isn’t fun, and can contribute to trauma, after an extended period of time. . It sounds so simple, but it is HUGE for your neuroception to know what’s coming next. . Get up at the same time. Go to bed at the same time. Make a calendar of your appointments to be in contact with your people, whether that’s via phone, Zoom, or talking with your neighbor from your driveways in the evening 🗣 Plan other activities at certain times; a daily walk, Yoga, meditation, lunch, reading, a block of time to clean, etc. . Plan your day. Plan your evening. Plan your weeks. . WRITE IT IN A CALENDAR. Seriously. Even meal times if that’s what helps you feel grounded into your daily experience. . Have things to look forward to! I’ve always said that I know I do better when I have something fun to look forward to. So, make a date for cocktail hour with friends over Zoom. Plan a long hike outside on the weekend.. . Whatever we can do to make our lives predictable during this unpredictable time, will be huge for our mental health ❤️

Mon secret pour le goût c’est une fois la soupe dans le bol, j’ajoute une cuillère de Miso! Having a spotter with this equipment is a major necessity 😅 . . 📝 Consistency: When performing all exercises, you want to ensure you’re executing the movement as “consistent” as possible. This means keeping the actual tempo relatively the same throughout the entire set. Each rep should look the same. This will ensure you know exactly how well you’re progressing on the movement week to week. This can ultimately lead to greater hypertrophic benefits through improved overloading as it’ll be easier for you to track, and protect you from possible injuries since you’ll be avoiding form breakdown. . . 🧬 Intensity: Relative intensity should be high because you should be pushing yourself & ultimately trying to improve week to week, that’s a given. But not always. Strength plays a role in improvement of course but what’s causing most of your overloading early on is neurological adaption. To set yourself up for progressive overloading purposes (a hypertrophy driver), you actually want to leave roughly 3-4 reps in the tank (3-4 RIR) to ensure you can successfully overload the following week by not fatiguing yourself from your new exercises & rep ranges during the first week of a new block. By keeping intensity lower, you will be setting yourself up better for your mesocycle ahead. At other times, such as during a deload, your relative intensity also decreases. With this said, at times there can be calculated changes in intensity. . . . 📈 Failure: Taking sets to failure? Like intensity, you should be cautious on when to stop during a set. Ideally you should be following a structured individualized training plan so you can aim for set rep ranges, however is taking sets to complete failure ever optimal? In my opinion, no. Taking a set to failure will cause far more fatigue than taking a set to say 1-2 RIR. More breakdown will occur from a set taken to failure, hence more growth yes, but it will be far more difficult to recover than it would be if you left a couple reps in the tank, & the growth isn't significant between the two either. You're better off with a ratio at which you can still produce both excellent growth and fatigue (2 RIR).

When you haven't slept all night but have a video appt with your doctor🤣 #halfdressed . I've been struggling with severe insomnia for years now. Between the anxiety, pain, and other side effects from hormone therapy and treatments, I cannot sleep. Going to bed and getting a restful night's sleep should be something we look forward to. But for me, it only brings on feelings of dread. Will I get to sleep tonight? How many times will I wake up tonight? Will this ever get better? . I've done counselling, trialed through different medications, natural remedies, complementary therapies, you name it, but still no relief. So I asked my doctor to refer me to a sleep specialist. Although I was supposed to be going in person today, it was thankfully rescheduled via Zoom so I didn't have to wait (and could lounge in my Mickey PJs too😂). . After filling out a 16 page questionnaire and going through the basics, there was nothing that specifically pointed to the root of the problem. So in order to rule out whether it's a physical disorder like sleep apnea or a mental health condition like anxiety or depression, I need to head into a sleep clinic and get hooked up for the night to see what my body gets up to when I try to sleep. . With all the clinics being closed though with #covid19, I don't have a date set when I'll get in. But just hoping that this is one step forward in the right direction to get me back to sleepy town again👍

Feeling a bit off, even drained? I woke up feeling a little off today, not feeling sick (thank goodness) but my energy level felt off. I’ve shared before my constant back and forth game with seasonal depression; also known as SAD (seasonal affective disorder). We’ve been so fortunate to have sunny warmer weather during our quarantining - which has been a huge lifesaver for me because otherwise I’d be hunkered down on the couch wrapped up watching even more television and reading than I’ve already done 🙊🙉🙈 I may be a Holistic Nutritionist but I’m also human, and will take full advantage of this down time! Anyways...back to my remedy for the day. I realized with this great spring weather I hadn’t been taking in my daily dose of Reishi mushroom powder - a wonderful adaptogen. This is a wonderful (godsend) of a supplement we can add to almost anything we eat or drink. And because we were surprised with a thunderstorm, I decided to make my clean Reishi hot chocolate. So if you’re in need of some brain power and some spunk in your step, try this amazing adaptogen out! Recipe: -1 1/2 cups milk of choice (I use Califia farms almond milk) -1 tablespoon maple syrup (you can use honey, raw sugar or coconut sugar) -1 teaspoon raw cocoa powder -1/4 teaspoon Reishi powder -1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract -1/4 teaspoon instant decaffeinated coffee (optional). This just gives your hot chocolate a punch in flavor. Heat your milk on the stovetop and bring to a low simmer. Add in the rest of your ingredients and stir until blended and dissolved. Grief can feel so complicated, + all encompassing. It isn’t something that we just experience, it carves pieces out of us -- it changes + shapes us. It may even feel impossible to be “normal” again. What even is normal? We are dealing with the collective loss + trauma, and it may feel so hard to exist right now. The world we knew is now gone. ⁠I’m here for you. Here are some of the physical indicators that can explain our human experience of grief. Bodies will communicate with us what inner turbulence we’re experience, you just have to listen. There are 5 stages of grief: Denial (avoidance: “this can’t be happening”). Anger (rage, passive, indirect). Bargaining (making a deal, “don’t make me give this up too” “I don’t want to have to lose this also”). Despair + Depression (sadness, pit in stomach, disappointment, crying). Acceptance (moments of insight that life won’t be total darkness). ⁠ As humans, our feelings typically ebb + flow, so regarding the stages of grief wouldn’t be much different -- we may go from anger to despair then back to bargaining, all while feeling that acceptance is so far away. I hope that during this time you can honor your grief by feeling it, and by connecting with those that you trust + you feel safe with. I've been feeling exhausted and a little under the weather, on my 7 day break from treatment and my body needs to rest and recover before my next 21 day cycle. I slept for four hours this afternoon on the sofa and I really needed it. I couldn't keep my eyes open. Anyway this was a good meal I had today. Easy to make and loads of colourful veggies with sweet potato chips cooked with the skin on in the airfrier. I really like these @freybentos pies. Its marked as vegetarian however nothing in the ingredients to suggest that it isn't suitable for vegans. I think it cost just £1 from @asda I've had it in the cupboard for a while. I used the knife with grip handle to cut the sweet potatoes that the lovely Carol from social services who helped me with some disability aids arranged for me. Its great for my painful joints and useless hands caused by my cancer treatment. The tin was pretty difficult to open and did take some time and effort. I do have a battery tin opener but it wasn't up to the job for this bad boy! One of the big things I’ve heard from a lot of people right now is that they can’t stop raiding the kitchen! Whether it’s out of boredom, anxiety or just accessibility, it can be HARD to stay out of the kitchen when you are stuck at home. If you’re used to working outside of your home, you were likely on a bit more of a schedule when it came to chow times. I know for us teacher-folk the times we can eat are very defined due to the constant chaos of the school day. Now, in our new virtual classrooms (aka home), it kind of feels like snack time all day long! If this this sounds like you, you might consider putting yourself on a loose eating schedule. Think about how many times you have a meal or snack throughout a typical day and then space that out over the whole day leaving 3-4 hours between each meal. For example, I usually eat 4-5 times. So my loose schedule might look like breakfast at 7am, a snack at 11am after my daily team meeting Zoom call, lunch around 2:30, dinner around 6:00 and then a little night time snack with my kombucha around 8:30/9. . But here’s the important thing: I’m not saying to set your alarm and then force feed yourself lunch because your phone said it’s time for eat! You still need to listen to your body! This could actually be an effective way to start reconnecting with your hunger cues! . When you start thinking about grabbing a snack or when your scheduled time comes to eat, ask yourself, do I actually feel hungry right now? Or, when you’ve lost track of time and suddenly you notice that hunger feeling, you may realize, ”hey look, it’s already 10:30!” Don’t wait until 11 because that’s your schedule. Go grab a bite because your body actually said so! ***If you find that you are truly getting hungry in shorter periods of time, then it’s time to look at WHAT you’re eating. More on that in my next post in this series.😉*** You don’t have to be super strict with this but it just may help you reconnect with the difference between “I want food because I’m hungry” and “I want food because I’m bored”.

💥☕💥 Supplement Geek Spotlight 💥☕💥 We live in a fast paced, work first (stressful) culture in North America. We can't really do anything about it. Sadly we rely on caffeine. This reliance causes an epidemic of adrenal fatigue. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are: -tiredness -trouble getting to sleep and waking up -unexplained weight loss -craving salt and sugar -reliance on stimulants such as caffeine -nonspecific digestive problems Yes, alot of these symptoms can be associated with bad nutrition, lack of sleep, caffeine addiction and high stress. So it doesn't necessarily mean your adrenal gland is fatigued. The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. They have an outer and inner section. The outer (adrenal cortex) produces androgenic hormones, cortisol and aldosterone. The inner (adrenal medulla) produces adrenaline (epinephrine) and norepinephrine. These hormones carry out a number of vital tasks, a few are: - maintain metabolism - inflammation management - blood sugar maintenance - regulates blood pressure - regulating salt and water balance - control fight or flight response A few ways to help this fatigue along is by doing something that will be hard for a lot of people. TAKE A BREAK FROM STIMULANTS. Oh no I said a bad thing didn't I? Caffeine being the most common cause of this along with stress in general is the easiest thing to cut down on or cut out completely. Taking a month off stimulants entirely will help reset that issue. The first week will be literal hell but it is worth it. The supplement pictured above (Stresscare) is a great herbal supplement to take to battle day to day adrenal fatigue and stress. I have taken it multiple times in the past. I don't consider myself an over stimulated person but I like taking Stresscare for precautionary purposes every 4-6 months. I sleep even better and my pre-workout work better when I need to take it. Adrenal fatigue is something to think about. COVID-19 is a complex beast. There is the sadness for people who contract it. There is empathy for healthcare workers who show up everyday for strangers and separate from their own family to protect them. There is fatigue for all the issues coming to the surface in our home lives. There is grief for time lost holding your loved ones, parties unplanned, and expectant memories that will not be made. There is fear for our loved ones who are more vulnerable. There is guilt in feeling like you’re one of the lucky ones because you have both the privilege and resources to socially distance yourself. There is anticipatory heaviness for the mental health crisis brewing. There is anticipatory bewilderment about what our national and global economy will look like once we peel out of this. These are Big Feelings. And they are valid. And they are heavy. Feel them. And when you need to put them down, put them down.
Don’t burden yourself by concealing them. Don’t zip them away. Notice. Name. And then place them in a box to the side. And by no means is this special treatment for the darker ones. The brighter ones deserve being noticed and named, too. The beauty found in the collectiveness of our global community. The hope created by the people putting aside their own comforts for the needs of others. The joy captured in the new memories being made. The deep appreciation for the kindness and heroism of others. The gratitude for people doing the best they can. The undeniable strength forged from unity. In this together. All the emotions. All the ups. All the downs. Together.

• FATIGUE 😴😴 • Depuis hier je me sens épuisée... Difficile à accepter étant donné que je passe toutes mes journées à la maison, non ? La réalité c'est que le confinement nous fait vivre au ralenti, notre corps peut se mettre à des moments en mode " économies d'énergie" , d'où cette sensation de fatigue... C'est aussi une période où nos croyances et nos valeurs sont remises en question... ce qui vient faire du tri et brasser pas mal de choses au niveau mental et émotionnel. Je me rends aussi compte qu'à force de vouloir à tout prix mettre à profit tout ce temps pour moi, mon entreprise, ma maison... finalement je me retrouve avec des to-do lists à rallonge... Ahlala... la culpabilité de ne pas en avoir assez fait... elle est toujours là finalement ! N'est-ce pas aussi une façon de combler tout ce vide qui m'entoure ? Bref... ce soir, je me pose. J'accueille cette fatigue. J'accepte que j'ai fait de mon mieux aujourd'hui. J'accepte que lorsque l'on met en place des choses, forcément on est fatigué. La vie est ainsi faite, de cycle d'actions puis de temps de repos pour ensuite repartir...
